Tuberculosis (TB)
Tuberculosis (TB)
TB remains one of South Africa's top health challenges, but it is curable.
What is TB?
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. South Africa has one of the highest TB burdens globally.
Symptoms
Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, chest pain, coughing up blood, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue. If you experience these symptoms, visit your nearest clinic immediately.
Treatment
Standard TB treatment is a 6-month course of antibiotics. It is essential to complete the full course even when you feel better. Stopping early can lead to drug-resistant TB, which is much harder to treat.
SA Context
TB treatment is provided free at all public health facilities. South Africa has integrated TB and HIV services since the two diseases commonly co-occur. Community health workers can support treatment adherence.
